Day Two: Cyber Safety

At Oak Hill School, we believe it's important to remember some safety tips when you are online. No matter how old you are, we think these tips are important. In October, 2012, the eleaders hosted a Cyber Safety Night at our school to discuss Digital Safety and how our online activities leave a digital footprint behind. We invited the whole school to bring their families.  We talked about cyberbullying, your digital footprint, and many other things. I really think the families that showed up learned a lot. The sessions were divided up between parents and students. Everyone had a chance to ask a lot of great questions. If you'd like to see pictures from that night, click here. All parents and students who attended took a pledge to stay safe online. We plan to do this every year. If you couldn't join us last year, we hope you'll join us for the next one!



The bulletin board in Mrs. Riley's Tech Lab reminds us that we are always making a digital footprint.




Here are some tips we want you to remember when you are online:

  • Don’t cyberbully.
  • If you are being cyber bullied, tell someone. Even if you are not sure, tell someone.
  • If you see cyberbullying, report it!
  • Don’t share personal information on the internet. For example, don't post your address on a web site.
  • Be kind.
  • Be understandable.
  • Don’t think that if you delete a comment it is completely erased, because it isn’t. Even if you can't see it, it's still there.
  • Remember - you have a digital footprint. Everything you do stays in cyber-space!
  • If you are emailing someone, make sure you know that person. Make sure it is okay with your parents that you have email.
  • If you see something online that is inappropriate, tell your parents or a trusted adult as soon as possible.
  • Never, ever agree to meet someone you met online.
  • If you are ever confused about anything you see or read when you are online, ask your parents ASAP!

    You shouldn't EVER show or tell your personal information on the internet. Some people are creeps and they like to get people's personal information and where they live. Do not share your information on the internet.

    I like your message today. I wanted to answer your question about not giving out personal information. I know that in my emails sometimes I get stuff from people I do not know asking to join them or sign up for a free trail or to help them out. When I come across these emails I click on block sender and delete them from my inbox. I never open them or click on them.

    I see kids cyber bullied very often. It is scary, because a lot of young people are afraid to tell their parents when this happens. I think the safety tips you wrote are great!

    I think every username and password of your identity sould be something people should know.yes,this is a tip I use.No,nobody I know gets cyberbullied.I think digidalfootprint is important because it make people do the right thing not the wroung thing.

    dont put were you live on a blog because if u delete it it is still out in the cyber space and yes someone can find it
    so lets say u are 12 and u post a silly picture on instagram 10 years later you go to get a jod and they look at all the pictures that u have posted and you will not qualify for the job and that is why you shouldnt post silly pictures on different blogs

    don't post inappropriate pictures or comments on a persons wall. i have a game that you can put comments on a person's wall and someone said to not post spam on their wall. i think that is a good idea.

    don't keep stuff from you parents or grandparents about Facebook instagram or twitter
    tell your parents and ask them if u can have a facebook instagram or twitter account for their permission

    maybe its a good idea to never go online without asking your parent or adult or have an adult go online without an adult. this website is very helpful. i learned a lot from this site! thank you!
